Rationale

Spectrum sharing has become increasingly challenging due to the ever-growing demand for access to the radio spectrum by a wide range of emerging radio services. This growth increases the risk of Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) between spectrum users. The challenge is particularly acute for passive scientific services such as radio astronomy, Earth remote sensing, and meteorology, where extremely sensitive measurements must be carried out in frequency bands defined by the laws of nature.

Protecting the scarce radio spectrum resources required for scientific research, while accommodating the needs of other spectrum users, requires continued collaboration between scientists, engineers, regulators, and industry. The RFI conference series provides a forum to promote interaction, exchange of ideas, and cooperation among the many communities dealing with radio frequency interference.

RFI 2027 will be held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, continuing this long-standing series of international workshops dedicated to RFI detection, mitigation, and spectrum management. The previous edition, RFI 2024, took place in Bariloche, Argentina, and was followed by RFI 2025, held online. Since the first workshop in Bonn, Germany in 2001, the RFI conference series has brought together experts from across the radio science disciplines to share advances and develop strategies to minimize the impact of interference on scientific observations and measurements.
